CPR and First Aid
The American Heart certification teaches participants to recognize life-threatening emergencies, such as cardiac arrest, and how to properly respond to save lives. CPR techniques taught include:
- CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) – applying chest compressions to create artificial circulation by manually pumping blood through the heart
- Use of an AED (automated external defibrillator) – a machine which gives a shock to reset the heart’s normal rhythm
- Heimlich maneuver - emergency technique for preventing suffocation when a person’s airway (windpipe) becomes blocked by a piece of food or other object
CPR/AED certification is good for two years and First Aid is good for three years. Education Outreach has five instructors who are certified to provide CPR/AED, American Heart Saver First Aid and Basic Life Support Health Saver.
