As part of a class project for the class "Menominee Treaty Era" the following resources were developed by students to support teachers and research on Menominee Treaties.
The Menominee tribe entered into treaties with the United States in the years listed below. Click on the year for resources related to each treaty.
Treaty of 1817: this treaty was basically a "peace & friendship" treaty between the Menominee Indians and the United States.
Treaty of 1827 : this treaty was an attempt by the United States to get the tribes in Wisconsin to declare their boundaries so they would know which tribe to approach when they wanted to purchase land. The Menominee went to the negotiations but opted out of declaring their boundaries.
Treaty of 1831: this treaty was an attempt by the United States to resolve a dispute between the Menominee Indians and the New York Indians in relation to what land belonging to Menominee the New York Indians were to be allowed to live on. It also included a land cession to the United State.
The Treaty of 1831 was amended.
