POSITION SUMMARY:
The Skills Lab Instructor will
provide academic assistance to students experiencing academic
difficulty. The instructor will take a case management approach in
assisting students with support and encouragement in achieving academic
success and course completion. The instructor position(s) is funded by
grant through 6/30/08.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist
students in math, English, and other basic skills;
- Administer
student assessments such as Accuplacer and TABE;
- Administer
computerized program learning programs such as Modumath and PLATO;
- Attend
selected college courses in the development of study groups for
selected courses;
- Teach GED prep
course work;
- Develop study
group plans and lead student study groups for courses (e.g. English,
math, natural science, social science, etc);
- Work
cooperatively and communicate with instructors, Student Services
personnel, tutors, and advisors to help student succeed in college
course work;
- Assist
students who are experiencing personal and academic difficulties and
refer them to appropriate agencies for further services;
- Maintain a
tutoring log of student name, amount of assistance time, and
assistance area (e.g. English 101, study skills, etc.);
- Compile data
and statistical compilations of Skills Lab participants;
- Perform other
duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess at
least bachelor’s degree in English, education, mathematics,
communications, or related field;
- Possess
excellent writing skills and be able to assist students in the
writing process across the curriculum;
- Possess
mathematical skills through level of college algebra;
- Possess
Microsoft Office skills and ability to navigate within programmed
computer learning programs;
- Previous
experience in assessment of students and teaching/ tutoring is
desired;
- Previous
experience planning and directing events is desired;
- Possess
excellent interpersonal, customer service, organizational skills, as
well as the ability to interact with diverse populations;
- Be available
for work both day and evening hours and also some weekend hours.
