Maria (Waupochick) Escalante
Library Director

Maria (Waupochick) Escalante is CMN’s first Librarian. Maria has two Master Degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. One is in Library Information Science and the other is in History. After graduating from UW-Milwaukee, Maria worked at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in Madison in the Archives Department. She enjoyed the job, but was ready to return to the reservation community. Maria accepted a position as school librarian for the Menominee Tribal School in Neopit remaining there for three years. Maria also served as part-time librarian for CMN during the 1996-97 school year. Maria accepted CMN’s full-time librarian position in 1997 which presented the challenge of establishing a technological library for this rapidly growing institution of higher education.
Maria fully understands and accepts the important, yet difficult task of building an effective academic library for student and faculty access. She has worked diligently with the faculty to acquire resources for the library which includes appropriate course-related materials, books, periodicals and media for student work.

Maria is an enrolled Menominee who currently resides in Shawano with her husband and three children.
