Youth Institute Included Fun, Learning and PSA Production

The Summer Transportation Institute at the College of Menominee Nation is a day camp for students attending middle school who wish to explore the science and careers that drive the vast transportation industry. The program on the Keshena campus took place from June 16 to July 2, 2014. Projects included remote-control cars, water blasters, kazoon kites, and a mock career fair.

On the more serious topic of safety, students produced a newsletter article and created and starred in a public service announcement video focused on safety. Field trips included the EAA AirVenture Museum, Mawah Cesniah, Wolf River Tubing, Young Eagles at the Cavu Flight Center, Tommy Bartlett Museum, Dells Army Ducks, Menominee Department of Transit, Door Count Maritime Museum, and the Historic Chicago Fire Boat.

Physical activity is strong component throughout the program as students participated in bike rides, volleyball, kick ball, basketball, and walking. In addition many team building and communication exercises are used to increase student’s self-confidence and public speaking skills.
